Nominations open for city’s Youth Council
THE City of Greater Geelong is encouraging young people with an interest in serving their community to apply for the 2025 Youth Council, with nominations now open.
The city says Youth Council is a great opportunity for young people to build and strengthen their leadership skills and to advocate on behalf of their peers.
During their time in office, Youth Council members will develop new skills and learn about civic and democratic processes, and will connect with other like-minded young people.
As part of the program, Youth Council members are also provided with mentoring sessions with councillors.
Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said people with all levels of experience could apply, with youth councillors supported by the city’s Youth Development team.
“The Youth Council is the official ‘youth voice’ of Geelong, and plays a vital role in helping council understand what issues are important to young people in our region,” Cr Sullivan said.
“It effectively acts as a way for young people in Geelong to have a say in the decisions that affect their lives.
“It is vital to have a diverse Youth Council that is reflective of the entire community, so I encourage everyone to consider putting their hand up to represent their peers and advocate for the causes that matter to them.”
2024 junior mayor Hteemoo Yohellaymusaw said youth councillors had gained valuable experience during their time in office.
“I and my fellow Youth Council members have enjoyed having the opportunity to contribute to the direction the City of Greater Geelong takes on issues that matter to young people in the region.
“We have learnt so much about how local government functions and importantly have grown in confidence.
“I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest in representing their peers and standing up for young people in the community to consider nominating for Youth Council for 2025.”
To be eligible to nominate, individuals must live in the City of Greater Geelong, be aged between 12 and 17 years at the time of nomination, be able to attend 80 per cent of monthly meetings, and be able to participate in the three-day Youth Council induction in mid-late January 2025.
Nominations close on September 13.
