ACTIVE Geelong is gearing up for the second iteration of its Active Workplace Awards, set to be announced next month.

With several awards including the top gong for Gold Award for Active Workplace of the Year, the initiative seeks to recognise workplaces that support its staff to be active by creating an environment and culture that enables physical activity and reduced sedentary behaviour.

Active Geelong chair Dr Hugh Seward said that due to the new hybrid environment workplaces found themselves in post-pandemic, it was more important than ever to approach workplace physical activity strategies in an innovative, holistic and personalised way.

“We know that physical activity reduces the risk of serious chronic illnesses like heart disease, cancer and diabetes, while also improving blood pressure, cholesterol and cardiovascular fitness, as well as mental health.

“We believe that by embedding an active mindset in Geelong workplaces we can have real impact on some of these health issues.”

“Our inaugural Active Geelong Active Workplace Awards last year recognised five local workplaces that had gone above and beyond to promote physical activity to their employees: Geelong Football Club, Deakin University, Christian College Geelong, Fluid Branding and West Carr & Harvey.

“These workplaces provide role-modelling and inspiration to other workplaces in the region around the physical and mental benefits of encouraging physical activity in the workplace, and we look forward to seeing the innovative ideas and practices showcased at this year’s awards.”

Active Geelong is a not-for-profit community organisation that aims to inspire community participation in a growing number of accessible and enjoyable physical activity opportunities.

A collaborative project that brings together leading businesses, doctors, researchers and individuals to address physical activity in the region, it is on a collective mission to, among other objectives, make workplaces in the Geelong region the most active in Australia by 2025.

Nominations for the 2023 Active Geelong Active Workplace Awards close on Wednesday, November 1, with the awards to be presented at at GMHBA Stadium on November 8
