Ocean Grove SLSC named senior state champs
OCEAN Grove SLSC added to its trophy cabinet at the weekend when it won the Life Saving Victoria Senior State Championships 2018 in Apollo Bay.
The win comes just a couple of weeks after the club took home the Junior title. It was also presented with the Championship Club for the 2016-17 season on Saturday morning.
“It was a great team effort by all at the winning club, who battled very windy, rainy conditions at some parts of the day,” LSV senior sports co-ordinator Kirsty Clark said.
“Best of all, they showed great sportsmanship, as well as outperforming the other teams in the races.”
More than 700 senior lifesavers travelled to Victoria’s south west coast to compete in the 2018 Victorian Senior Lifesaving Championships, hosted by the Apollo Bay Surf Life Saving Club for the first time in more than a decade.
Jan Juc SLSC came in second place and Mentone LSC came in third out of the 34 competing clubs across the two-day event.
Ms Clark said the events were hotly contested.
“We had seasoned competitors against rookies, family members competing with and against each other and a great display of sportsmanship.”
The event was able to be put on thanks to the generous support of major event sponsor Engine, as well as Surf Life Saving Australia sponsors Westpac, DHL and Holden.
“None of it would be possible without the dedicated team of volunteers both on and off the beach who worked tirelessly to make sure the seniors enjoyed a great couple of days at the beach, competing and catching up with friends from clubs around the state,” Ms Clark said. “We look forward to seeing them all next year.”
