OCEAN Grove is about to host one of the biggest events in its sporting history, with the Ocean Grove Bowling Club set to welcome the world for the 2026 World Bowls Indoor Championship.
From 11–16 May, elite players from 33 nations will compete under the club’s redeveloped dome, bringing a truly international field to the Bellarine just months after the venue’s major upgrade.
Club chief executive Nathan O’Neill said the championship represents a defining moment for both the club and the broader Bellarine region.
“This world event will deliver a significant boost to our local economy, supporting hospitality, accommodation and retail sectors at a time when visitation is critical,” he said.
“We encourage our local community and visitors from across Victoria and beyond to come and be part of it.
“This is a rare opportunity to witness the very best in the world compete right here in Ocean Grove.”
The tournament will be played inside the club’s state-of-the-art 16-rink indoor dome and feature men’s and women’s singles alongside mixed pairs, with a high-calibre field assembled across all divisions.
Among the headline names to call Ocean Grove home next week is seven-time world champion Alison Merrien (Guernsey), and former world champions Shannon McIlroy (New Zealand) and Iain McLean (Scotland).

Australia’s hopes will be led by New South Wales’ Corey Wedlock and Queensland’s Kelsey Cottrell, who are both ranked among the sport’s elite.
They will be joined by defending champion Jack McShane, from New South Wales, who returns after claiming the 2025 World Indoor Singles title in Aberdeen, Scotland at just 20 years of age.
McShane has already established himself as a world champion and one of the sport’s brightest rising stars.
O’Neill said the event also provides a chance to showcase the Bellarine to a global audience.
“For visitors, it presents a genuine opportunity to extend their stay, experience world-class bowls and explore some of the best coastal destinations, wineries and dining experiences the Bellarine has,” he said.
With strong crowds expected, the championship is shaping as both a major sporting event and a timely tourism boost for the region.
Entry is free, but attendees must register via Eventbrite. For more information, head to oceangrovebowls.com.au
