Official launch of major tennis upgrade
GAME, set, match! A major upgrade at the Point Lonsdale Tennis Club is complete and has been celebrated with an official launch.
Extended, refurbished and more accessible clubrooms are the centrepiece of the improvements, which also included resurfacing two courts, and new LED lighting and poles for the remaining courts.
An online membership and court booking system has also been introduced, which the club says has led to a 54 per cent increase in court usage.
Point Lonsdale Tennis Club president Peter Callahan officially invited members and visitors to try the new facilities during the ceremony proceedings.
“With our extensive renovations now complete, there’s never been a better time to try a hit of tennis at the Point Lonsdale Tennis Club,” Mr Callahan said.
“I want to thank our funding partners for their support in delivering these outstanding new facilities, and acknowledge the hard work of our members and past committees over many years who have made these improvements possible.”
Officially opening the project, Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said the Victorian Government was proud to invest in community sport.
“Clubs like the Point Lonsdale Tennis Club are vital to the health and wellbeing of a local community,” Minister Neville said.
“The club has been an important part of the Point Lonsdale community since 1931 and now with over 600 members these new facilities will encourage even more locals take to the courts.”
The project was possible with a $250,000 state government grant, $53,177 from the Point Lonsdale Tennis Club, $46,000 from Tennis Australia, and $30,000 from the Borough of Queenscliffe, which also project managed the upgrade.
Queenscliffe mayor Ross Ebbels said the project was a team effort between the funding partners.
“I want to congratulate the club, and I’m looking forward to joining members for some tennis this summer,” he said.
