OUTDOOR dining has been approved just in time for summer, with the City of Greater Geelong confirming 38 temporary permits across the municipality.

Businesses have received a much-needed boost with free permits being handed out in a bid to increase the number of customers seated at restaurants.

Under the ‘Last Step’ of the State Government’s roadmap, venues can now seat up to 70 patrons outside provided the two-metre rule is adhered to.

The new dining concept is funded by the Local Councils Outdoor Eating and Entertainment Package and offers immediate relief for businesses as many head into their busiest time of the year.

Additional outdoor dining support has been prioritised by the State Government to better protect the public from COVID-19 transmissions.

The City has stated it is committed to making it as “easy as possible” for local businesses to start or expand their outdoor dining options.

New figures released by the City show the financial impact of COVID-19 with a devastating blow to the hospitality industry.

The Tourism Greater Geelong and Bellarine 2019-2020 annual report estimates 2,187 jobs were lost across the accommodation and food services industries between April and June this year.

Chairperson for the Arts, Live Entertainment and Hospitality Portfolio, Eddy Kontelj, has said the council have been mindful of the impacts of COVID-19 restrictions on businesses.

“Our venues have been resilient and adaptable during this year, and we are doing all we can to help them take advantage of eased restrictions during the busier summer period,” he said.

“We have sought to assist them every step of the way, from waiving major fees to providing the support required to take advantage of any creative outdoor dining opportunities.”

In support of this, businesses can apply for a permit to expand along the footpath or make temporary use of other open spaces.
