A NEW youth employment program aimed at supporting young people who are struggling to secure work has opened applications across the Geelong and Bellarine region.

The Change Room is a pilot employment initiative delivered in partnership with Social Enterprise Group (SEG), hospitality veteran and co-founder of family-run Curlewis winery Baie Wines, Nadine Kuc, and the Queenscliff Football Netball Club (QFNC).

The program will work with up to four young people aged 18 to 30 in its first year, providing training, mentoring and hands-on work experience within a community sports club environment.

Participants will complete job-readiness training and mentoring before moving into paid positions during the 2026 football and netball season, working in hospitality and customer service roles identified by the QFNC and becoming part of the club’s weekly operations and community life.

SEG general manager and Borough of Queenscliffe councillor, Isabelle Tolhurst, said the program responded to ongoing barriers facing young people entering the workforce.

“The Change Room is a shining example of how local partnerships can contribute to solving the regional problem of high youth employment.

“We’re proud to be piloting the program with community partners who are committed to supporting young people in meaningful ways.”

The application process has been designed to be accessible, with no prior work experience required. Young people can apply via email, in writing, by voice note, video, or through a short conversation with SEG staff.

Selection will focus on attitude, willingness to learn, ability to work as part of a team and the capacity to commit to QFNC’s Thursday night dinner service, which has become a significant weekly gathering for the local community.

Ms Kuc said the program would give participants a strong foundation for future employment.

“I’m excited to deliver this program in conjunction with SEG and QFNC because I firmly believe hospitality skills can genuinely change lives,” she said.

“It teaches teamwork, responsibility and connection, and gives young people a foundation to step into work with confidence.”

Applications are open to young people living in the Geelong or Bellarine region who want to build skills, meet new people and take a positive step toward employment.

Applications close on Friday, January 16, with training to begin in February.
