A touch of pink for Ladies Day in Ocean Grove

BREAST cancer affects the lives of many, and for Kim Turner, who lost her aunt to the insidious disease, Ocean Grove Cricket Club’s Pink Ladies Day is an important celebration.

Spearheaded by Ms Turner and Danni Vose, the annual event at Ray Menzies Oval, Shell Road raises funds for the McGrath Foundation, which funds breast-care nurses who support individuals and their families experiencing breast cancer.

This Saturday’s event will also raise money for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), who provide free information and support to Australians directly affected by a breast cancer diagnosis.
“We went to the Ocean Grove Football and Netball Ladies Day and it was really successful, so this year, we modelled parts of our event off that,” Ms Turner said.

“There will be a large grazing table in the middle, a silent auction and raffles. We have a breast cancer survivor coming along to chat with us and members from Ocean Grove’s BCNA group will be attending.”

Starting at 2pm and running until 5pm, friends, sisters and mothers will be entertained with live music and receive a complimentary glass of champagne on arrival.

“Tickets are $25, local musician Sam Hanson – who’s a former Ocean Grove cricketer – will be providing live music and entertainment.

“The cricketers will play with pink stumps, pink pads, cricket bats and balls across the day. We’re expecting around 100 people with 70 tickets already sold; tickets are also available on the door.”

Ms Vose said the response from the community had been amazing, with businesses and local organisations more than happy to donate.

“Considering everything going on with the bushfires, the generosity of the community has been amazing. We really want to thank everyone who has contributed.

“One of our social committee members Nicole put the call out on the community noticeboard and businesses were happy to donate, we’re so appreciative to have gotten anything.”

Ms Turner said everyone was welcome to head along and enjoy a great afternoon while raising money for an important cause.

“My aunty died of breast cancer, it’s one of those things that has all kind of touched us. Come along and wear a touch of pink – this club has had a few breast cancer survivors, so we just want to give back.”

Pink Ladies Day is at Shell Road Pavilion on Saturday, February 8. Tickets are available at LamiSaru Boutique or at the cricket club.
