PLAQUE TO COMMEMORATE CAPTAIN LONSDALE

October 3, 2018 BY

Point Lonsdale was named after Captain William Lonsdale (pictured) of the British Army, sent to Port Phillip from Sydney in 1836 to investigate unauthorised settlers in the District. Captain Lonsdale was a remarkable man, respected by the early settlers and the aboriginal people. He held numerous important and demanding positions in the Port Phillip district and later the Colony of Victoria. On Saturday, October 6, a plaque will be unveiled at the promenade in Point Lonsdale Road (opposite the shops) to commemorate Captain Lonsdale’s influence in developing the Port Phillip District and the contribution he made over 18 years to a flourishing region. The plaque will be unveiled by Captain Lonsdale’s great greatgranddaughter, Cecilia Newman.
