PORTARLINGTON Golf Club will soon offer health and wellbeing classes thanks to a $90,000 grant from the federal government.

Announced last week by Corangamite federal member Sarah Henderson, the funding will go towards covering the cost of the club’s new playground, which was installed just before Christmas, and a space for parents and grandparents to use for classes, such as golf training programs, yoga, Zumba and pilates.

The club is aiming to enhance women’s recreational activities within the small community.

Club chief executive officer Ron Stockdale said the club was very grateful for the funding, which was part of the second round of the Coalition government’s Community Sport Infrastructure Program.

“Having a family friendly venue within our community has always been on our agenda and while Port golf club is great for golfing and our junior development programs, we also wanted to provide other health and wellbeing classes, because there is nothing like it in Port.”

Ms Henderson said she was looking forward to seeing the social benefits the new area would bring to the Portarlington community.

Meanwhile, with the northern part of the Bellarine moving into the Corangamite electorate, Ms Henderson said she was working hard to identify what mattered to local residents and had launched a campaign for a new north Bellarine pool.

“It is clear that Labor has been missing in action on the Bellarine; to sign my petition please go to sarahhenderson.com.au/petitions.

“It is a key priority of our government to promote the social and health benefits of physical activity and sport and our investment to upgrade facilities and infrastructure will provide a real encouragement for those local residents not currently active.”

Our government has prioritised investment in local grassroots sports because we recognise the wider health, social and community benefits that come from greater activity and participating in sport.”

Ms Henderson is holding a community meeting Drysdale Recreation Reserve, Duke Street, Drysdale on February 28 between 6pm and 7pm.

All community members are welcome to attend.
