Point Lonsdale Boardriders celebrate 60 years young
THE Point Lonsdale Boardriders have marked six decades in the waves, with the club holding its 60th birthday celebration on Saturday.
Club president Max Lazarus said it was an unreal experience to be around so many contributors of the club Saturday, including past presidents and committee members.
“It was a great success overall.
“It was great to see people that founded the club all the way through to the young people at the club chewing the fat talking about stories from their experiences with the club.
“Notably, we had a panel up on stage with speakers from each decade answering a series of questions ranging from ‘Who was your favourite surfer growing up?’ to ‘What was the biggest party you had at the club?’.
“It was a fantastic event from top to bottom.”
The club’s base, the old engine shed near Point Lonsdale lighthouse, was decked out in surf memorabilia with an array of boards and photos on display.
A commemorative plaque was also on display, giving guests the option to sign it and confirm their attendance.
Mr Lazarus said the occasion reaffirmed his belief that he was a custodian of the club until the next president took over.
“It reminded me that I am a caretaker of the club, it’s got a long history of 60 years, and after speaking to so many people and past presidents, it’s easy to realise there has been a lot of work over many generations to get it where it is today.
“I feel a sense of responsibility to leave it in a better place than I found it and ensure it has another 60 years ahead.”
Mr Lazarus also thanked the 60th birthday sub-committee Rod Nicholson, Darren Allbut, Pete Goodall, and Ross Bird for their efforts.
