Point Lonsdale Probus Club president announced

A NEW Probus Club has been formed in Point Lonsdale following their initial meeting on March 7.

The purpose of the inaugural meeting was to gauge the community interest in a new club and to select the committee.

Probus Clubs are designed to bring those who are retired or semi-retired together with a range of activities and outings in a social environment.

Helen Grant was appointed as president and said they were impressed by the amount of people who have shown interest in the club.

Ms Grant has recently given up full time employment and went along to the initial Probus meeting to see what it was all about.

“I’ve always been very impressed by the outings and the camaraderie the probus presents to people and the opportunity to be part of a group.

“When you retire, sometimes you don’t have a lot of friends because they have passed away or they’re living elsewhere, and it can be quite a lonely time and you don’t have the confidence to go and join groups.

“I found probus to be incredibly encouraging and I liked what I heard, and I liked what I saw, and I don’t regret it.”

The new club have got their first guest speaker lined up with the opportunity to hold a range of activities in the future.

“It’ll be things that are of interest, things that stretch your mind and outings, I believe Probus has a history of going on bus tours, going away for weekend travel, so I think there’s a large variety of opportunities for people,” Ms Grant said.

She said at the moment the club is still finding their way and taking “baby steps” in encouraging people to join.

“I think the word is out and about that people are wanting to be a part of it, so I can only envisage long term plans will be fantastic.”

Ms Grant is looking forward to more people joining and encourages all those interested to come along to their meeting on April 4 at Point Lonsdale Surf Life Saving Club from 9.30am.
