Port carnival atmosphere in full swing all week
PORTARLINGTON Golf Club’s John Bowman was quoted as saying “That was the best Carnival of Golf ever”, after the resounding success of the Club’s signature week of golf at Portarlington.
Mr Bowman’s comments come after the week welcomed almost 1000 golfers from across Australia to a superbly presented course and exceptional clubhouse catering.
“The fact that the weather held out for the entire week, apart from the very last hour was an absolute bonus,” Mr Bowman, Tournament Chair, said.
Julie Flintoff from Curlewis won the Wettenhall’s Bellarine Women’s Open Championship on the Tuesday and then went to take the win in the Tabcorp Women’s Ambrose Pairs with Curlewis Partner Jill Pring on the Friday.
Max Edmanson from Portarlington was also on the podium twice during the week, winning the Four Person Ambrose Event with Phil Toyne, Joel Launer and Chris Otway, with an outstanding score of 53 that included three Birdies.
Max also won the Bellarine Times Men’s Ambrose Pairs even with Cameron Place from Bendigo Bank on the final day of the Carnival.
Chris Calthorpe, representing the Bellarine Times, narrowly missed an elusive hole-in-one on the 17th and ended up snagging a couple of bottles of Robert Oatley wine for the Nearest the Pin instead.
Yvonne Casey from Portarlington staged a spectacular comeback from injury to win the Women’s Single Stableford event on Thursday.
The week’s visitors didn’t go home empty handed either, with Graeme Mathers from Barwon Heads winning the Bellarine Veteran’s Classic from Graham Whittaker from Mount Derrimut.
Northern Golf Club players Graeme Baker and Terry Evans won the PFD Men’s 4BBB Stableford Event while Northern’s Iswurlall Johty was victor in the Bendigo Bank Men’s Single Stableford.
“We are determined to continue to provide the best amateur golfing week on the Bellarine Peninsula,” CEO Ron Stockdale said.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone back next year, to see our exciting new and improved clubhouse facilities.”
