Port market set to be a roaring success

Members of the Lions Club of Portarlington and Drysdale discuss this Sunday’s market.

THE Lions Club of Portarlington and Drysdale has taken over the running of a monthly market on the foreshore in Portarlington.

Kicking off last month, the markets are held on the last Sunday of every month and will run until May.

The market offers a mixture of local producers, speciality vendors, apparel suppliers, homewares and garden retailers, body product purveyors, artists, and everything else you want for a great browse-and-buy day out on the bay.

Club president Geoff Smith said it was a privilege to host such a great community event and was pleased so many people were supporting it.

“We have been inundated with good wishes and thank-yous from locals who obviously love their market,” Mr Smith said.

“I think it fits in well with the Lions International mission of serving our communities.

“We do this through our volunteer work and you may have seen us in action on a barbecue, at a raffle, or at the gate of a local footy match.

“But we also help other local groups to raise funds and promote their purpose.

“Running the market enables us to provide free sites to local community groups.”

The market site is under Bellarine Bayside’s jurisdiction, and Portarlington Primary School had a permit to run a market on the foreshore for many years before the Lions club was asked to pick it up this season. The Lions club’s first market was on October 28, the next market is on November 25. It will run monthly to May next year, break for winter and resume in September.
