THE CITY of Greater Geelong is fielding interest for construction of its Drysdale Town Square upgrade project, which is now open for tender.

COGG is planning for the town square to be delivered alongside the Drysdale Library build that is already under construction to create what it is calling “a holistic civic heart” for the town.

The project’s tender went live on the city’s procurement site last week and is open until September 14.

The town square would create a new amphitheatre focused on the new library, while aiming to enhance the existing park and create a pedestrian mall in the upper area of Wyndham Street.

COGG said better pedestrian access through the area, including links between existing laneways, consideration of the heritage buildings, open streets and deciduous trees already at the site, creating open space for community events and al fresco dining areas were key aspects of its project designs.

Project officers also worked with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners on designs, which were based around the importance of waterholes in the area and with Drysdale town centre being a place to gather and celebrate.
