Gabby and Seb get their foot in the door
THE Queenscliff Music Festival (QMF) has announced joint winners of its 2020 Foot-in-the-Door competition, with judges unable to recommend either of the two finalists over the other.
The “battle of the bands” style competition supported by FReeZA (a Victoria state government initiative) is usually run as part of the annual festival.
However, Foot-in-the-Door moved online this year due to coronavirus restrictions and the postponement and eventual cancellation of the 2020 event.
Entrants had to upload a new video of their music to YouTube before August 31, and fill in an online application form.
Five acts were shortlisted and their videos shown across the QMF social channels in September.
QMF received a high calibre of applicants this year, and the industry judging panel found it challenging to separate the two finalists so decided to name both Gabby Steel and Seb Szabo as winners.
Gabby Steel has established an enthralling musical style created by her soulful vocals and folk-pop song writing, sure to get you tapping your feet.
Though she is inspired by the likes of Missy Higgins, Adele and The Waifs, Steel strives to create her own unique writing style by blending elements of soul, pop, jazz and folk.
A joyful and charismatic performer, Seb Szabo and his band deliver an honest, inclusive and powerful live show designed to lift the spirits and empty the lungs. A gifted lyricist, Seb’s resonant voice has already enraptured audiences.
“The standard of musicianship is very high from all the artists – they are all deserving of a foot in the door,” one of the judges said.
FReeZA supports young Victorians getting involved in their community by planning and running drug, smoke and alcohol-free music and cultural events for other young people.
QMF organisers have congratulated both winners and look forward to seeing them perform at the 2021 Queenscliff Music Festival.
