Queenscliff Croquet Club celebrates centenary
THE Queenscliff Croquet Club celebrated its 100th birthday at the weekend, with a centenary dinner kicking off celebrations on the Friday night.
Attendees dressed up in old costumes for the evening event, which was then followed by a weekend of social croquet games involving all the croquet clubs in Geelong – Belmont, Drysdale, Eastern Park and Colac.
Queenscliff Croquet Club secretary Denise Spark said the club had been around for a very long time – 100 years, in fact!
“It came into existence in 1919-20 as something for the wives of the bowlers to do!” Ms Spark said.
“In its 100 years the club has been through a number of changes but now enjoys a thriving and growing membership who play either association or golf croquet.
“As is the case for many Victorians, members of the Queenscliff Croquet Club relish the opportunities to get out into the fresh air, take some exercise and enjoy the fellowship of other club members.”
Ms Spark said croquet was played all year round, and there were plenty of members who played whatever the weather!
“Although the games are “social”, there is much use of the cunning strategies common to billiards!” she said.
“As part of the centenary celebrations, during Seniors Week there will be a “Come and Try” on Saturday October 12.
“It is great fun to try to hit a ball through a hoop with one of the club’s mallets.”
The Queenscliff Croquet Club is always happy to welcome new members, so if you are interested, please contact Denise Spark on 5256 2584.
