Rail bridge taking shape

A MARSHALL rail crossing bridge is taking shape and a busy Belmont intersection has reopened to traffic as a major upgrade to Barwon Heads Road continues to progress.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allen visited Geelong to inspect works with South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman last week.

Builders will begin beam lifts next month at the new bridge after finishing installation of 570 cubic metres worth of concrete supports in recent weeks.

The 18 steel beams are under construction at Corio supplier Thornton Engineering for the late-August installation.

Design work has included input from Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, which will include bridge wall panels and landscaping.

Mr Cheeseman said he “can’t wait” to see the project’s benefits, while federal Corangamite MP Libby Coker said the project was vital to boosting tourism and jobs on the Bellarine.

The new bridge will remove a level crossing at Barwon Heads Road as part of its $365-million first stage upgrade that will duplicate the road to Reserve Road, Charlemont, and is due to finish by late-2023.

“We are ensuring the road and rail network meets the needs of the growing community, through projects including the Barwon Heads Road upgrade, and the recently opened Waurn Ponds Station upgrade,” Ms Allen said.

“Geelong is experiencing the largest population growth in regional Victoria, with the Armstrong Creek urban growth area expected to provide up to 65,000 homes over the next 10 to 25 years alone.”

Vehicles once again have free passage on Barwon Heads Road at Belmont after finishing an intensive earthworks period.

Authorities had closed the road southbound from Settlement Road to Breakwater Road for works, but the lane reopened to traffic earlier last week.

The Breakwater Road intersection is also reopened after closing in June.
