Remembrance Day ceremonies held across the Bellarine

December 11, 2017 BY

RSL branches across the Bellarine will hold services to commemorate Remembrance Day on Saturday.

The Queenscliff/Point Lonsdale RSL Sub-Branch respectfully ask the community and its visitors to pay due homage by attending a Remembrance Day Service in the RSL Hall from 10.30am.

Or, observe one minute’s silence as the bells ring at the crossings on the main streets of Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff, followed by the Ode at 11am, which will be read by primary school students.

The Ocean Grove-Barwon Heads RSL Sub-Branch will hold two services.

The Barwon Heads service will be at the Barwon Heads Community Hall, Hitchcock Avenue, at 10.45am.

It will be hosted by John Minotti and attended by students from the Barwon Heads Primary School.

The Ocean Grove service will be at the Ocean Grove Cenotaph, Ocean Grove Park, at 10.45am.

Phillip Christian will conduct the service, with the Ocean Grove Scout Group in attendance.

The Drysdale RSL Remembrance Day service will be held at the Cenotaph in High Street, Drysdale, at 10.50am.

The Leopold War Memorial committee will hold a ceremony from 10.30am, and then people will have the opportunity to lay wreaths and floral tributes.

Following the ceremony the Lions Club of Leopold will provide tea and coffee for a gold coin donation.

The memorial is at Leopold Memorial Park, on the north-west corner where it borders Melaluka Road and Stringers Lane.

Contact your local RSL for further information on services and keep an eye out for red poppy sales in the lead up to and on the day.

Red poppies have been worn to remember those who fell during times of war since 1921.

Each year on Remembrance Day, Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
