World War II veteran Cec Browning sells a poppy to his granddaughter Lainie Shanahan outside Coles. Poppies are available for donations ranging from one dollar to $50.

RSLs across Australia will hold Remembrance Day services on Monday, November 11, with the Torquay RSL service at Point Danger to begin at 10.40am.

This year will commemorate 101 years since the armistice that ended World War I.

Torquay RSL president Bob Tyler said everyone was invited to come and pay their respects at the service.

“It is a time we reflect upon the sacrifices made by those serving their country,” Mr Tyler said.

“Our ceremony includes a formal wreath laying and the service is expected to be attended by many residents and visitors to Torquay.”

Torquay RSL representatives will also hold Remembrance Day services at aged care centres and schools in the region.

The Torquay RSL is also selling red poppies to raise money to support veterans.

Mr Tyler said the funds raised would help serve people in many ways.

“It is not only older veterans and war widows who benefit from poppy sales but many of Australia’s younger veterans and their families are finding they need some assistance to maintain themselves and their families,” he said.

“Buying a poppy from our teams of volunteers in Torquay will go a long way towards helping those who need support.”

These poppies will be on sale outside Woolworths, IGA and Coles in the Torquay Town Centre from 9.30am-4pm until November 10.

The Lorne RSL will hold a service at ANZAC Memorial Park from 10.30am.

The Winchelsea RSL’s service will begin at 10.45am at the World War I war memorial on the corner of Princes Highway and Palmer Street, with people encouraged to arrive a few minutes early.

The Anglesea RSL will also hold a service at the shopping centre flagpole from 10.30am.
