Roundabout to slow speeding drivers

A TEMPORARY roundabout will be installed at the intersection of Kirk and Winterley roads in Point Lonsdale in response to community concerns about speeding traffic.

The Borough of Queenscliffe says Kirk Road residents have reported traffic travelling along the Kirk Road at dangerous speeds.

“We’ve heard that this makes the neighbourhood unsafe and causes challenges entering and exiting driveways,” the council said.

“We want all our residents to feel safe using their streets, so council commissioned a traffic engineer to examine the problem and how it might be resolved.

“A traffic count found 23 per cent of vehicles using Kirk Road were exceeding the speed limit during the survey period, and a specialist engineer recommended installing a roundabout on the intersection of Kirk Road and Winterley Road to slow traffic.”

The engineer’s report also advised that a roundabout would also prevent cars travelling quickly around the corner.

Accepting the advice, the council will start work on the temporary roundabout this month.

The temporary roundabout will be trialed over 12 months to determine if the roundabout has effectively slowed traffic, or if design needs alterations before deciding on a permanent solution.

Feedback from residents on the roundabout and comment on any other issues or ideas can be shared with the council by completing a form on the Borough of Queenscliffe’s website.
