Geelong champion Joel Selwood has been chosen to present the Premiership Cup should the Cats defeat the Brisbane Lions in Saturday’s AFL Grand Final at the MCG.
The 2022 Premiership Captain will hand the Cup to Senior Coach Chris Scott and current skipper Patrick Dangerfield if Geelong claims its 11th VFL/AFL flag.
Selwood said the honour carried deep personal meaning.
“I’m extremely honoured to be asked to present the Premiership Cup if Geelong wins in Saturday’s Grand Final,” Selwood said.
“This Club holds a special place in my heart and has been such a big part of my life. It’s been a joy to watch the Club continue to chase greatness every year, with so many of the players I’ve played alongside continuing to challenge in pursuit of football’s ultimate prize.
“I wish the players, staff, members and supporters all the best for Saturday, enjoy the moment and embrace the opportunity.”
Geelong Cats CEO Steve Hocking said Selwood was a fitting choice.
“Joel is so well respected within the Geelong Cats, as well as in the wider Geelong region and football communities, and we are excited to see him present the Cup if we are successful on Saturday,” Hocking said.
“As our most recent Premiership captain, Joel has had an indelible influence on so many of our current players, coaches and staff across a career that spanned 16 years and 355 games, including four Premierships.”
Since 2004, each competing club has nominated a Premiership Cup presenter. Previous Cats to hand over the Cup include Cameron Ling in 2022, Doug Wade in 2011, Bob Davis in 2009 and Fred Wooller in 2007.
Selwood retired after leading Geelong to its 2022 Premiership. His decorated career included 355 games, four Premierships, six All-Australian selections, three Carji Greeves Medals and four Most Courageous Player awards. He remains the AFL’s longest-serving captain.
The AFL also confirmed Luke Hodge will present the Norm Smith Medal, Adam Simpson will present the Jock McHale Medal to the winning coach and Ken Fraser will present the Ron Barassi Medal to the winning captain.
