September 12, 2019 BY

John Owen is a six-time club champion and winner of the 2019 NSW Senior Amateur Crown.

BARWON Heads Golf Club will host the opening round of the Men’s and Women’s Victorian Senior Amateur Championships next week.
Teeing off on Monday September 16, two multi-tee starts will take place at 7.45am and 1pm, with the remaining 36 holes to be played on the two courses at Thirteenth Beach over the following days.
One hundred and forty men and 60 women will tee off and the standard of golf is expected to be high with the majority of male players holding handicaps below 3.7.
Eight men and one woman have handicaps below zero.
The reputation of the championships and the Barwon Heads courses they are to be played on created high interest from participants.
Winning a place in the starting field (based on handicaps) was a competition in itself, highlighted by 66 men on the reserve list.
Players representing clubs from Perth, south-west Western Australia, Darwin, Auckland, Canberra, New South Wales and Queensland will join those from Victorian clubs.
The women’s field includes Dawn Macdonald, a member of the Barwon Heads Golf Club and prior club champion.
Adam Charleston, John Owen (a six-time club champion and winner of the 2019 NSW Senior Amateur Crown), Tony Light, Graeme Mathers and Barry Tippett will also represent the club.
The Championships, run by Golf Australia, have been contested since 1995 (Men) and 1931 (Women).
Played previously as standalone events, the Men’s & Women’s championships combined in 2015 to be played at the same venue within the same week.
The Men’s Championship is played over 54-holes stroke play and is one of two GA Order of Merit Senior National ranking events in Victoria.
Trophies will be awarded for overall gross & net performances, as well as age category trophies (55-59 years, 60-64 years, 65-69 years, 70+ years).
The Women’s Championship will also be played over 54-holes stroke play and is one of two GA Order of Merit Senior National ranking events.
Trophies will be awarded for overall gross & net performances, as well as age category trophies (55-59 years, 60-64 years, 65-69 years, 70+ years).
The championships run from Monday September 16 to Wednesday September 18.
