Seniors Week begins on Sunday

Seniors Week has been well-received in previous years.

OCTOBER 6 to 13 is Victorian Seniors Week, with events on across the Surf Coast Shire to help celebrate older community members.

Surf Coast general manager of culture and community Chris Pike said the program helped show the community’s gratitude to their older members.

“Our active, skilled, caring community of older adults is one of our greatest assets.

“By delivering a diverse and inclusive local program of events and activities, Council hopes to get the whole community involved in celebrating Seniors Week Festival and recognising the role that older people in our community.”

As part of the Australian Government’s “Be Connected” program, Wednesday October 9 will see the University of the Third Age host a Family History Online Workshop.

The four-hour workshop helps people improve their online skills while also allowing them to research family records, births, deaths, marriages, wills and probate documents.

The free event will be held at the Kurrambee Myaring Community Centre.

On the same day, Ocean Mist Aged Care will host a free afternoon tea and informal questions and answers sessions for those interested in the facilities. They will also provide a tour around the grounds.

In Lorne on Thursday October 10, Great Ocean Road Health are holding a high tea in the morning to acknowledge the contribution senior members of the community make.

On October 11, accredited exercise physiologists will hold a group exercise session. This $5 session will focus on fall prevention and pain management.

A home cheesemaking workshop at the Torquay Senior Citizens Club will run concurrently. This event is limited to 12 places.

The following day seniors can enter free into the Star of the Sea Art Exhibition.

Later in the month on October 29 there will also the be Super Brain Train for Seniors. Wellness educator Maggie Flanagan will teach people about the latest brain protective science and daily activities for active learning and memory preservation.

There are also a range of major events taking place in Geelong and Melbourne.
