Shire flies the Lions flag

THE Torquay Lions are in the spotlight this month, with the service organisation’s flag flown by the Surf Coast Shire office throughout June.

Torquay Lions members Lyn Macquire and Harvey Price joined shire mayor David Bell on Friday June 1 to raise the Lions International flag on one of the flag poles outside the shire’s Torquay office.

June is the final month in a year when Lions clubs around the world celebrated the 100th anniversary of the club’s founding in the USA.

Torquay Lions began the Centennial locally with the presentation of funds at a special morning at the shire offices.

The $8000 provided by Lions Clubs in the shire went towards the Youth Mobile Pod which is available for placement at various towns in the shire to assist youth in times of disaster, or when allied health or mental health support may be needed.

During its Centennial celebrations, Torquay Lions distributed more than $40,000 to support various local needs, national needs and international disaster relief when money was needed urgently.

Local relief for the bushfire affected farmers in south west Victoria attracted $2,000 from Torquay Lions in recent months.

The Torquay Lions Club has 41 members and is known throughout Torquay for its assistance to local projects including Foundation 61, the rehabilitation centre at Mt Duneed.
