HEAD to Drysdale’s Lake Lorne this Sunday (April 28) for the Bellarine Catchment Networks Lake Lorne environment Day.

The family friendly event is all about understanding the value of Lake Lorne while showcasing nature in the area.

Bellarine Catchment Networks Naomi Wells said there will be a range of kid’s activities on offer.

“It’s really a nature immersion where we’re going to be using binoculars, looking at some of the bird species, learning about local frogs and indigenous species of plants.”

The weekend also coincides with the City Nature Challenge, which is an international citizen science event.

Kids will be able to use binoculars to look at bird species in the local area.

During the day attendees will be shown how to use an app where they can upload images of plants, shells, frogs or anything living, where they are then identified and added to an international database to get a snapshot of living things in the area.

Kids will also be able to take part in a scavenger hunt, painting and using air dry clay.

Bellarine Landcare will be at the event, providing attendees the opportunity to ask questions about weeds, birds or indigenous plants.

Ms Wells hopes from this event people will gain a better understanding about what’s in their own backyards.

Attendees will also learn about the invasive weeds that are impacting the Bellarine Rail Trail and how they can help.

The Bellarine Catchment Network will also talk about the ongoing work they are doing to restore the habitat along the Bellarine Rail Trail with the removal of weeds.

“The Bellarine doesn’t have a lot of vegetation left, we’ve actually lost 95 per cent of remnant vegetation, which was here pre colonisation, so all the patches that are left are so valuable,” Ms Wells said.

“There’s some really beautiful grassy woodland habitat and it really can be impacted by invasive weeds and a lot of these weeds are still getting out into the environment from people’s gardens.”

The Lake Lorne Environment Day will run from 10am until 12pm, with participants meeting at the north-west corner of Lake Lorne.
