Council has applied for funding towards new crickets nets and training facility for Newcombe and District Cricket Club.

THE City of Greater Geelong is hoping to secure state government funding for two priority projects to support Newcombe District Cricket Club and Anakie Football Netball Club.

The council is applying for a $100,000 grant for the development of new cricket nets and a practice facility at Newcomb District Cricket Club’s Grinter Reserve, through the 2021 Sport and Recreation Victoria Community Cricket program.

New nets for a practice facility are estimated to cost $400,000 and the council has agreed to provide $300,000 towards the project.

The council’s priority project proposed for a $150,000 grant under the Country Football Netball Program is for the development of an additional compliant netball court at Anakie Reserve.

The total cost of the court which will benefit the Anakie Football Netball Club and competing teams is estimated to be $250,000, with a required contribution from council of $100,000.

Each project was assessed on their alignment council’s social infrastructure plan and G21 Cricket Strategy or G21 and AFL Barwon Strategy, asset condition and compliance, overall community benefit and project readiness.

Council officers have also consulted with SRV, peak sporting bodies including Netball Victoria and Cricket Victoria and president of the Geelong Cricket Association to outline the priority projects and seek feedback.

Preliminary costings for projects may change throughout detailed design and construction.
