State and federal funds to improve Victoria’s resilience

THE federal and state governments have committed $9.1 million to improve Victoria’s resilience to natural disasters.

Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security Angus Taylor, who has responsibility for federal disaster assistance, said the funding is part of the jointly funded National Partnership Agreement (NPA) on Natural Disaster Resilience.

“This agreement allows Victoria to continue to support communities to better minimise the impacts of natural disasters,” Mr Taylor said.

“It also recognises the vital role of emergency management volunteers by providing funding to ensure ongoing training and support is available.”

Victorian Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino said $5.8 million will go towards a range of Emergency Management Victoria preparedness, recovery and resilience projects.

“The remaining $3.3 million targets flood planning and mitigation projects through the Natural Disaster Resilience Grants Scheme with grants of up to $250,000 available.

“These important programs are led by Victorian agencies, local councils, non-government organisations, volunteer organisations and researchers who help communities to prepare for and respond to natural disasters.”

Applications are welcomed from Victorian state government departments and agencies, including flood-plain management authorities, municipal councils, volunteer and other non-government emergency service organisations, and research institutions.

Applicants are required to contribute a third of the total project costs either in cash or in kind.
