AS BARWON Heads Primary School gears up for its 150th anniversary celebrations, students have been learning all about its history.
In the classrooms, learning has ranged from looking at the different sites the school has been located, school events, and traditions over the years.
Students have also interviewed past Barwon Heads Primary School students and teachers to get a better understanding of the school.
“The students are really interested in learning about the history of our school and are getting a lot of enjoyment from looking at the photos of students and teachers over the years,” assistant principal Rachael Curtain said.

“There are some great conversations going on across the school of how things have changed over time.
“Students are developing an understanding of the history of our school and the important role a school plays throughout all the decades, especially in a small community like Barwon Heads.”
All of the historical learning will culminate in a 150-years Walk Through Time Exhibition as part of the school’s anniversary celebration on September 20.
The exhibition will showcase photos of the school and town over the years and a variety of student work from their history studies.

Also included in the exhibition is some of the town’s history that students have been exploring including shipwrecks, the origins of street names and different shops that have occupied the main street.
Ms Curtain said exploring the history of their immediate world expands learning towards natural and global explorations.
“By tracing the school’s evolution – from foundation to now, exploring the many challenges over time, the advancements in technology and perspectives and values, to significant alumni and cultural shifts – students gain insight into shared journeys and collective identity.”
Ms Curtain hopes the exploration inspires students to be more active and engaged members of the community.
Barwon Heads Primary School encourages everyone to head along to their 150th year celebrations on September 20, even if they do not have a connection to the school.
