POSTERS created by Queenscliff and Ocean Grove students have triumphed in Barwon Water’s annual National Water Week competition, following a record number of entries.
More than 1,000 students from 22 local schools created posters inspired by this year’s National Water Week theme, “It’s time to change the world”.
The theme was linked to the United Nation’s Sustainability Goal 6, which calls for a world where everyone has access to safe and clean water.
Prep Oli Kent from Queenscliff Primary School, Grade 5/6 student Isobel Wrochna from St Aloysius Primary School in Queenscliff and Grade two student Amelie Flynn from Our Lady Star of the Sea in Ocean Grove were three winners from the Bellarine.
Barwon Water education officer Fernando Garcia said the theme resonated strongly with students, who recognised they enjoyed a safe and secure water supply when many of their contemporaries around the world do not.
“We had 1,023 entries overall, which is a record for our National Water Week poster competition,” Mr Garcia said.
“Congratulations to all participating students and schools.”
Students who finished in the top three of each of the four divisions received an individual prize pack and four randomly drawn schools received a $500 sustainability grant each, this included Whittington Primary School.
The sustainability grant will enable schools to invest in water saving initiatives.
The artwork of the winners and runners-up in each category was on display at the Geelong Show’s Barwon Water pavilion.
They will also be displayed at the Colac Show in early November.
All winning entries can also be viewed on the National Water Week page on Barwon Water’s website.
National Water Week (October 21-27) is an annual event aimed at raising awareness of issues affecting our most precious natural resource and celebrates our achievements in striving for a sustainable water future.
