Students showcased in National Water Week competition

THE creative talents of local primary school students have been showcased as part of a special National Water Week initiative from Barwon Water.

More than 580 artworks were submitted into the Barwon Water National Water Week Poster Competition, with students from 14 different schools completing colouring projects.

The competition aimed to celebrate the importance of water to everyone’s day to day lives.

Local winners included Gabriel McConchie from Anglesea Primary School, Charles Yi from Bellaire Primary School, Zhenqi Hu from Nazareth Catholic Primary School, and Keyana H from Wangala Primary School.

Additionally, Charles Yi took home the best Year 1-2 poster in the country, while Zhenqi Hu finished third in the state for years 3-4.

Barwon Water acting general manager customers and community Emma Connan said it was inspiring to see young people demonstrating care for water through a creative lens.

“This year’s competition theme ‘Water for all, inspiring action’ aims to highlight the power of collective action.

“If we each save a little, we save bucketloads.

“With the number of participating schools doubling from last year, it is pleasing that this message is reaching more children and their families.”

Mr Connan said National Water Week is a chance to reflect and celebrate the role water plays in everyone’s life.

“It’s a timely reminder that water for tomorrow relies on what we do today, and so many of the competition submissions captured that perfectly.”

National Water Week wraps up this Sunday, October 27.

All entries are on display in the lower north windows of Barwon Water’s head office, facing Atchinson Place, across from the Geelong Arts Centre.
