Students strike for climate

HUNDREDS of thousands of students across the globe dropped the books on Friday, March 15, to protest for government action on climate change, with many Geelong school children skipping school to swarm the streets alongside their concerned parents and grandparents.

In what has been dubbed as an intergenerational issue, activists claim the Morrison Government’s lack of forward thinking in relation to the planet has outraged young people, who believe they are most at risk of suffering the consequences of government inactivity.

Holding signs that read “the climate is changing, why aren’t we?”, “we’ve destroyed a land that isn’t even ours”, “planet before profit” and “there is no planet ‘B’”, students weren’t shy in expressing their extreme disappointment with the nation’s most powerful decision makers.

Students from schools across Geelong, including Sacred Heart College and Kardinia International College, gathered outside the Geelong Town Hall and the office of Corio federal MP Richard Marles to voice their fears for the future.

“For too long this government has refused to act on climate change. Only Labor will act.

“Keep up the pressure and demand change. An amazing turnout in Geelong for the School Strike 4 Climate,” Mr Marles said in a social media post after the protest.
