Supporting the mental health of teens
Read the Play will host two Parenting Young Minds events, where parents will learn how to support their child if they are facing mental health issues.
It’s hoped that from the event, attendees will gain a greater understanding of mental health and the signs in young people as well as the support services available in the region.
Child psychologist and Read the Play patron Dr Michael Carr-Gregg will be the keynote speaker at the event, with opportunities for questions following his presentation.
Currently the Read the Play program is delivered to 14 to 18-year-olds in sporting clubs.
Read the Play’s Michelle Gerdtz said in 2024 they are expanding their support to parents.
“At Read the Play, our main aim is to support the mental health education of young people and the clubs they are involved in.
“We would like parents to be armed with the knowledge and skills to be able to support their child if they are experiencing mental health issues.
“We would love to see parents of these 14 to 18-year-olds attend these sessions so they understand the content of our programs prior to their child completing the program.”
The free event is aimed at parents, however, is open to anybody who would like to learn more about mental health and the challenges facing young people.
“Parent education and support in the area of mental health is important to us. We want to ensure that young people are supported at their club and at home,” Ms Gerdtz said.
There will be two Parenting Young Minds events, April 29 from 6pm until 8pm and May 5 from 2pm until 4pm.
The events will both be held in the Performing Arts Centre at St Joseph’s College in Newtown.
