THE Surf Coast Suns have almost wrapped up their season, and president Mark Burgess said 2018 was the club’s biggest year yet.

He said the Suns had experienced membership growth of more than 50 per cent over the past 12 months, with almost 250 families now involved.

“Our Friday night Auskick numbers are now over 100, with around half of those hitting football age next season.

What is impressive is the fact that we have 25 girls in Auskick this year – something the club is not only proud of, but really excited about the future and direction we are heading.”

The Suns fielded four junior football teams in 2018 (twice as many as in 2017) – two under-9s, one under-10 and one under-11 – and anticipate, based on Auskick attendance and continued growth in Torquay North, that the club will field seven to eight teams (including an under-13 team) next year.

“The focus of the club over the past year across football and netball has been to create a fun, safe and inclusive culture, where kids are given an opportunity to develop their skills and form friendships that they will cherish,” Mr
Burgess said.

“While our footy season is all over, our netballers still have one round to go with the under 15 team pressing for a spot in the finals.

“The girls haven’t had enough of netball yet, so we will also be entering netball teams into the summer competition in Geelong.

“Last year we held our inaugural Surf Coast Suns Classic golf day at The Sands Torquay, which is a great way to fundraise for the club and to create a Suns community. There are still limited tickets available for this year’s classic,
which is being held on September 14.

“The committee is really proud of all of our kids and how they have performed this year and would like to thank all of our wonderful families and volunteers for their support throughout the season. The club would like to extend this gratitude to the broader Surf Coast community who have really begun to embrace us.”
