A SITE on the main street of Portarlington would become five townhouses under a planning application submitted to the City of Greater Geelong.

Developers are seeking approval of a $3.5 million plan to build the multi-storey residences at an empty site at 1 Newcombe Street, which is at the corner of Sproat Street.

The proposal includes two double-storey buildings fronting Newcombe Street, and three triple-storey buildings that face Sproat Street.

Planning reports argue that their proposal is an appropriate development in an identified growth zone that would increase housing stock in the town for existing and future residents.

“The proposal will assist in directing future housing needs to urban Portarlington via infill development.

The multi-storey residences would be built at an empty site at 1 Newcombe Street.

“The proposal will build on existing infrastructure within urban Portarlington which encourages sustainable growth.”

It also indicated that existing properties in the area would mean the new development would not be out of place in the Portarlington foreshore area.

“The development is highly responsive to the site and its context, maximizing the opportunities the site presents while minimising the impacts on adjoining properties and the character of the neighbourhood.

“The design of the development provides a contemporary response that is respectful of the neighbourhood character elements.”

The city is advertising the plans until August 23 at its planning website.
