Cold sores are a common viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). These small, painful blisters that typically appear on or around the lips can be a source of discomfort and embarrassment for many people.

The virus is highly contagious and can be transmitted through close personal contact, such as kissing or sharing utensils. Once infected, the virus may remain dormant in the body and reactivate, causing the characteristic painful sores.

Several factors can trigger or exacerbate cold sores:

  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Weakened immune system
  • Hormonal changes
  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Food allergies

When cold sores do appear, they typically follow the same five stages:

  • Stage one – Tingle Stage (Day 1)
  • Stage two – Blister Stage (Days 2-4)
  • Stage three – Ulcer/weeping Stage (Day 4)
  • Stage four – Scabbing/crusting Stage (Days 5-8)
  • Stage five – Healing Stage (Days 8-10)

At the first signs of a cold sore speak to your Direct Chemist Outlet pharmacist. They will be able to assess your health and condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment. Over-the-counter antiviral creams, ointments, and oral medications are readily available. These medications work by inhibiting the replication of the virus, helping to speed up the healing process.

Managing and treating cold sores as soon as possible, ideally stage one, is crucial to alleviate symptoms and reduce the duration of an outbreak.
