Tri flies through Barwon Heads

The Barwon Heads Triathlon has wrapped up for another year, with a strong field turning out to tackle the coastal course across swim, bike and run legs.

Competitors of all ages and abilities lined up for the 400m swim in the protected waters north of the Barwon Heads bridge, before heading out on a 14km ride along 13th Beach.

The race finished with a 4km run from Barwon Heads towards Ocean Grove and back, drawing plenty of spectators for the final stretch.

David Fawkes was the first male home, finishing in under 40 minutes. Victorians Sean Miller and Tommy Smith filled the remaining podium places.

Louise Wood claimed her second Barwon Heads Triathlon title in the women’s race, winning in 48 minutes and 22 seconds. Alana Park and Emilie Guy rounded out the top three.

Team Shand and Deliver took out the teams event, finishing more than a minute clear of their nearest rivals.

Race organiser Lincoln Beckworth said the event continued to attract both seasoned competitors and newcomers.

“We had some really fast times, as well many who just enjoyed it,” he said. “To get 300 first-timers taking on an event of this calibre is truly remarkable and we are stoked with that all round. We feel great to be introducing people to triathlons in our region.

“What a great crowd, great support from local businesses and great fun.”

He said the Barwon Heads Triathlon will “100 per cent” return in 2027 for its 12th edition, bigger and better than ever before.
