Volunteers plant hundreds of trees at Ocean Grove
NATIONAL Tree Day in Ocean Grove was a great success with more than 130 people planting 750 trees to create a new urban woodland at Lake Avenue Reserve.
“In my opinion planting trees is the best action we can take locally to arrest species extinction in the face of the climate emergency,” local John Bowman said.
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago but if my grandchildren have any hope of leading a quality life we have to plant now.
“Trees are collateral damage to the amount of building going on around town and the canopy is coming down before our eyes.”
Mr Bowman said the Bellarine Greens and Ocean Grove Coastcare would be brainstorming to find ways to raise funds to grow the urban woodlands.
“We may ‘Go Fund Me’ and we are working on ‘Bellarine Flying Footprints’, a fund to contribute to when taking a flight,” he said.
“Participants will be able to witness their carbon offset grow in their own neighbourhood.”
