THE pavilion at Wallington Reserve is set for a major redevelopment, with construction expected to begin this month.
The City of Greater Geelong has contracted Plan Group Geelong to deliver the $4.25 million project, which the council says will address the lack of female-friendly and accessible changerooms at the site.
Works will deliver two new complaint changerooms, accessible toilets, a kitchen and canteen, and a social space, alongside ramps and wider doorways and walkways to remove the access barriers that currently plague the pavilion.
A district-level reserve, the grounds are home to the Wallington Cricket Club and Bellarine Bears Baseball Club, and the upgrades are expected to directly benefit the players and staff involved in the all abilities programs run by both clubs.
The redevelopment is identified as a strategic priority in the Ocean Grove sporting infrastructure plan, and will be jointly funded by the city, which will contribute $3.25 million, and the Victorian government, which will provide $1 million.
Murradoc ward councillor Rowan Story said the pavilion at Wallington Reserve was due for a much-needed refresh and the council was looking forward to seeing the finished product.
“We’re excited to partner with the Victorian government to deliver a new fit-for-purpose pavilion that is accessible to community members of all abilities, ages and genders,” he said.
“Following an open tender process, Plan Group Geelong was found to be the most suitably qualified and experienced to deliver the works.
“The construction works, which are expected to wrap up in the second half of 2026, will generate jobs in Greater Geelong and support local suppliers.
“Modern social infrastructure, such as sporting pavilions, are known to contribute to better health, wellbeing and social outcomes in communities and encourage people of different ages and abilities to have a crack at sport.”
Bellarine MP Alison Marchant said the project would support inclusive local sport.
“I am proud to support this project through the Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund, creating fair and welcoming sporting spaces where everyone can take part and feel proud of their local club,” she said.
“This project will deliver modern, accessible and inclusive facilities for the Wallington community, ensuring local players, umpires and supporters can enjoy the sports they love in comfort and safety for years to come.”
