THE $15.9 million redeveloped Queenscliff Ferry Terminal has officially opened its doors, providing passengers improved services and a world-class gateway to the Bellarine and beyond.

Yesterday (Thursday, April 20), Corio federal member Richard Marles and Corangamite federal member Libby Coker celebrated the opening of the new facility in Queenscliff alongside Bellarine MP Alison Marchant, Victorian Minister for Regional Development Harriet Shing and Searoad Ferries chief executive officer Matt McDonald.

More than 200 people were in attendance for the opening.

The improved terminal includes modern facilities, safer access, better car parking, function rooms, retail space and both indoor and outdoor dining overlooking Port Phillip Bay.

The redevelopment project was jointly funded under the $500 million Geelong City Deal, with the federal government contributing $10 million and Searoad Ferries putting in a further $5.9 million.

Ms Coker said the opening of the facility was a fantastic opportunity to secure more local jobs and boost tourism in the region.

“From the first crossing in 1987 to the opening of this new facility today, the ferry service in Queenscliff has connected people on both sides of Port Phillip Bay.

“It represents a renewed gateway to the Bellarine, the Surf Coast, Geelong, and the Great Ocean Road.”

Ms Shing said the opening of the facility would be a huge economic boost to the region.

“This Geelong City Deal project [is] creating more jobs and more reasons for people to experience this world-class gateway to Geelong and the Great Ocean Road.”

The opening included a traditional smoking ceremony.

Designed by F2 Architecture and built by Kane Construction, the new terminal build facilitated 71 new jobs during construction and an additional 22 ongoing jobs within Searoad Ferries’ operations.

Mr McDonald said he was incredibly pleased to see the finished product, and that the terminal would deliver safer and more enjoyable experiences for all motorists and pedestrians.

Searoad Ferries CEO Matt McDonald adressing those in the crowd.

“The new Queenscliff Ferry Terminal provides Searoad Ferries’ customers with a world-class experience.

“It’s delivered an improved infrastructure project between government and the private sector that holds enormous potential for creating jobs and boosting the local economy.”

Operating since 1987, the Searoad Ferries services carry more than 250,000 vehicles and 960,000 people each year, making it the busiest car and passenger ferry route in the country.
