World-class events showcase why Greater Geelong is a great place to live, work and play
For many readers, this weekend is one of the last chances to soak in the best that the Geelong and Bellarine regions have to offer before returning to the familiar rhythm of work and school.
Thousands have flocked to local pools to escape the heat this summer, with City of Greater Geelong Swim Sport and Leisure Centres providing some respite from the scorching sun.
Pool goers have gathered across the holiday break for a series of free open days as part of the Summer of Fun Program.
Each Swim Sport and Leisure Centre has taken in turns hosting a range of fun, free activities including sausage sizzles, games, and live DJ sessions.
North Bellarine Aquatic Centre (NBAC) kicked off the Summer of Fun in late November, and it’s safe to say the program has gone swimmingly all holidays.
It’s great to see the NBAC drawing a crowd over the summer. I was fortunate enough to be one of the first to swim a lap in the pool when it opened in November 2023, and the facility has gone from strength to strength after its season was extended last year.
Next Sunday, February 2, Bellarine Aquatic & Sports Centre’s will take its turn hosting, with free entry to the pools from midday.
There are many other aquatic and land-based activities to enjoy over the coming month.
The Festival of Sails opens this Saturday, showcasing Geelong’s stunning waterfront.
As the largest sailing regatta in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s not just about racing—it’s where world-class sailing meets a three-day festival packed with live music, gourmet food, and unforgettable entertainment.
And just days later, Eastern Beach will host crowds for the 10th anniversary of the world-class Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
Watch from the start-finish line at Steampacket Gardens or make your way to the Challambra Live Site to cheer on the riders as they tackle the iconic King and Queen of the Mountain Climb.
Both world-class events are a showcase of why this a great place to live, work and play.
But there is so much more to enjoy over the coming months as the region lays claim to the regional events capital of Victoria.
Check out Australia’s best golfers at the 2025 Vic Open Golf Tournament from 6 – 9 February for free at 13th Beach Golf Links.
The Open is known as the first event in the world where men and women play at the same time, on the same venue and for the same prize money.
For those looking to push themselves, the Barwon Heads Triathlon on 23 February includes a 400m swim, 14km cycle and a 4km run. The beautiful coastal backdrop of Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove make this the most picturesque triathlon in Victoria.
Witness some of the world’s top triathletes in The Ironman 70.3 Geelong on 21-23 March. The event consists of a world class Sport & Lifestyle Expo, an IRONKIDS triathlon or swim/run event, and the main IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong race open to Professional athletes through to beginner Age Group athletes.
And looking forward, we can eagerly anticipate the Avalon Australian International Airshow in March.
All these events not only enrich community spirit and provide significant economic benefits to Greater Geelong, they also strengthen our reputation as a world-class events host.
So, whether you’re looking to taking a dip at one of our Leisure Centres or watch world class athletes take on gruelling physical challenges, there is plenty to see and do in Geelong and the Bellarine long after the holiday break is over.
