Wrack wall build begins
PORTARLINGTON’S Point Richards boat ramp is closed for several months for construction of a rock groyne to prevent sea grass build-up.
State government agency Better Boating Victoria (BBV) started the stage two upgrade mid-last month, which will complete a $3.7 million upgrade for the ramp.
BBV expects work to last 12 to 14 weeks, with the ramp due to reopen in mid-August.
The boat ramp, west of Portarlington, is susceptible to dead sea grass build-up from northerly winds, which restricts access for safety reasons.
BBV expects the breakwater in front of the west-facing ramp will reduce build-up while also ensuring calmer waters around the ramp.
“Projects like this have positive impacts on the whole community,” Bellarine MP Lisa Neville said.
“Great boating opportunities provide a drawcard for boaters and holidaymakers to visit to Point Richards, helping to boost the local economy.”
Stage one of the upgrade, which finished in August last year, improved parking for the site by adding 50 additional spaces including for trailer and boat preparation areas.
The government said it had worked closely with Bellarine Bayside Foreshore’s committee of management during the upgrade, alongside other local stakeholders.
