THE Geelong Youth Council is still at work during the coronavirus, and used its July meeting to share insight into the experiences of young people during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Youth councillors were invited to participate in a consultation process with independent statutory body, Commission for Children and Young People, which is gathering feedback about the impacts of health and social restrictions on Victoria’s youth population.
Some of the themes raised included modifications to schooling, mental and physical health, increased use of social media and changes to daily timetables.
The Youth Council’s monthly meeting was held on July 13 via Zoom and started with a minute of silence to recognise Reconciliation Week.
The agenda included discussions about City of Greater Geelong projects involving environmental strategy and community safety.
Youth councillors were also briefed about the voting process for the Geelong Youth Awards 2020, which will be announced via an online presentation on Monday, July 27.
The next Youth Council meeting will be held on August 17.
“Like everyone in the community, we’re experiencing significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Junior Mayor Farzana Hussaini said.
“Youth Council was proud to represent our peers by sharing the positive and negative impacts of the pandemic, particularly in regard to social isolation.
“We also thank the teams from the City of Greater Geelong who are actively seeking our advice on projects.
“We look forward to acknowledging young achievers in the community at the Geelong Youth Awards next week.”
