Make your bathroom look smooth WITH A SHAVING CABINET
WITH ALISON COLLINS FROM BOMBORA CUSTOM FURNITURE
The humble shaving cabinet is a game changer in the bathroom.
When we built our home several years ago, with the multitude of decisions, putting a shaving cabinet in the bathroom was not even on my radar in our initial plans. It wasn’t until a friend suggested the idea that I instructed our builder to make allowances for a recessed cabinet in our frame.
Now that I have had a bathroom with a shaving cabinet, I can never go back! These thin cabinets seem to hold an astonishing array of items, all organised in beautiful rows where everything is in easy reach. A jar of makeup brushes, toothbrush holder and beauty products all lined up in order of use… it is an organisation lover’s heaven.
With all of these small items being placed in the cabinet, this then leaves plenty of storage for larger items such as toilet paper, hair dryer, straightener and shaver while not needing a monstrosity of a vanity.
There are many options, design-wise, for a shaving cabinet. The unit can be completely recessed into the wall so it just looks like a mirror but press on a corner and it pops out like magic. The unit can have a timber surround or even an open shelf for styling.
At home, we opted for a semi recessed unit. This way it has a beautiful timber surround to match our vanity but does not encroach into the space. The solid timber frame creates an opportunity for plenty of styling options such as a gorgeous plant draping over the edge or a collection of candles to set the mood.
A great idea for the underside of the cabinet is to install a LED strip to provide lovely mood lighting or a soft night light in a family bathroom. We have had the power points installed inside our cabinet to keep them out of sight but in the perfect position for use.
The internal aspects of our shaving cabinets are created from timber to match the frame and the vanity. This little touch adds to the sense of luxury which is so desirable in the bathroom.
