Plans for Grove apartment build
DEVELOPERS have revealed plans for a three-storey apartment block in the centre of Ocean Grove.
Plans lodged with the City of Greater Geelong show designs for 17 properties within the building at 57-59 The Parade.
The proposal would involve demolishing existing houses at the properties, a basement-level car park and the 17 apartments, which includes four penthouse properties.
The planned building is half a block away from the busy Ocean Plaza shopping area and nearby community facilities such as Ocean Grove Library and Ocean Grove Park.
Planers User Experience Design Group argued the development would fit in with an “eclectic mix” of building styles in Ocean Grove.
“Over the past decade, more contemporary and coastal forms are emerging and beginning to set the architectural precedent of Ocean Grove,” the report stated.
“The Parade and subject site provide a great opportunity to provide further housing to an established burrow of Ocean Grove that has direct connection to Ocean Grove Village and all the amenities it has to offer.”
As part of the development proposal, planners submitted a Green Travel Plan, which aims to encourage sustainable transport options such a public transport and cycling.
But the plans quickly drew opposition from local community members.
Social media users raised concerns around traffic and parking in the already busy area, especially during summer, and noise impacts due to the development’s density and potential to house holiday accommodation properties.
The plans are available to view on the City of Greater Geelong’s planning website.
Residents have until August 25 to have their say.
