Pupils come up with some alluring names for Leopold estate

Local developer Ample, who are behind the successful Hinterland estate in Moriac and the new Allure estate in Leopold, were keen for local input to the naming of the streets in their Leopold development and engaged with Leopold Primary School to have their grade 4 pupils come up with some names.

A range of name options were put forward by the students with a particular focus on the local region, its rich Aboriginal heritage, and native flora and fauna.

Street names must follow a criteria set by the state government and the City of Greater Geelong.

The city received a number of street names from the pupils, and have advised that the names Kangaroo Paw, Murnong, Callitris and Bunjil were selected from their list would be applied to the roads within Allure Estate.

Leopold Grade 4 teacher Emma Rodgers said that this term, the class had been looking at local government and the area/community that the students lived in.

“One component we’ve looked at is how the council helps to maintain the roads/streets (some are state, though), parks/sportsgrounds/playgrounds, pet management, building permits and council buildings.

“The kids have also explored different events happening in the Greater Geelong area.”

An Ample representative said the company enjoyed engaging with the local community.

“Many families who have purchased land in our Allure Leopold estate have children in Leopold Primary School so working with the kids to name the streets was a logical step towards crafting a proud and healthy community.”

Ample worked with the children of Moriac Primary School to name the roadways within their Hinterland Moriac estate, with street names reflecting the three school houses.

Allure Leopold is a boutique community of 96 allotments with views across Lake Connewarre and west across the Geelong skyline.
