Often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Bellarine’, Leopold sits strategically between Geelong and the peninsula’s coastal towns, making it a convenient and well-connected hub for families and holidaymakers alike.

Just 10 minutes from Geelong CBD and a short drive from Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads and Queenscliff, Leopold offers a balance of suburban comfort and natural beauty. It’s position on the Bellarine Highway places it squarely on the route to some of Victoria’s most popular beaches and wineries, while also offering easy access back into the city.

Leopold’s history dates back to the 1850s, when it was originally known as Kensington. The suburb was renamed in 1892 after Prince Leopold, the Duke of Albany and the youngest son of Queen Victoria, to prevent ongoing confusion with Kensington in Melbourne.

Today, Leopold is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the region. It has transformed from a semi-rural town into a vibrant and family-friendly residential area, bolstered by developments like the Gateway Plaza – a major retail centre with national supermarkets, department stores and dining options.

Leopold is well-serviced by schools, childcare centres and community facilities, while expansive reserves like the Leopold Memorial Reserve and Estuary Boulevard Reserve offer playgrounds, walking trails and sporting facilities, making it a popular choice for growing families.

Just south of the township, Lake Connewarre and its surrounding wetlands form part of a Ramsar-listed ecosystem, recognised internationally for its importance to migratory bird species and wetland biodiversity.

While it is often seen as a residential base for those working in Geelong or the Surf Coast, Leopold is a destination in its own right, offering a blend of history, nature and convenience that continues to attract new residents and visitors.

The predominant age group in Leopold is 30-39 years.

Households in Leopold are primarily couples with children and are likely to be repaying $1,400-$1,799 per month on mortgage repayments.

In general, people in Leopold work in a professional occupation. In 2021, 79 per cent of the homes in Leopold were owner-occupied, mirroring the same figure recorded in 2016.
