A new era beckons at Geelong Lawn
IT’S the spiritual home of tennis in Geelong, with a history dating back to 1882, now looking forward to a great future under new management.
Local fitness guru and tennis aficionado John McConachy took over the management of the iconic centre earlier this year, with a strong commitment to “build the membership, make it more familyfocused and re-establish Geelong Lawn as THE tennis Mecca in Geelong”.
John took the reins at ’Lawn when the powerful Y.M.C.A. organisation stepped back from the management less than two years into a five-year contract. Sadly, things just didn’t come together as the “Y” had envisaged and on the encouragement of ’Lawn’s president Bob Spurling, John took up the challenge to take the club into the future.
First-up, a new state-of-the-art tennis shop, Surf Coast Racquets, established right there in the club’s main room opened just last week, under the control of Tim Batty, a sports store proprietor from Melbourne.
Tim specialises in a wide range of racquets and sports shoes, also restringing and more. Well worth a browse!
There’s also a 24-hour gymnasium, fully fitted out with Nautilus equipment, squash courts, a friendly bar for that after match refreshment and a fabulous clubrooms, available for birthdays, functions, whatever.
Then there’s those courts – grass (currently closed for winter), en tout cas and Plexicushion. Always open for play for members and the public.
Tennis In Geelong’s Phil Hunt went down there last week to extend a warm welcome to John and his crew. Very impressed!
Tennis, squash, gym, pennant and social competitions, it’s all there and very affordable too.Check it out on info@geelonglawntc or give John a call on 5243 2819 – he’s friendly, chatty and just loves tennis!
