AFL Barwon reviewing junior football age groups

September 3, 2020 BY

AFL Barwon could move away from the odd number age group system they have used for the past three seasons.

AFL BARWON is undertaking a review of junior male and non-competitive mixed football age groups ahead of the 2021 season.

Following a review in 2017, AFL Barwon began operating with odd number junior male age groups up to Under 19. Before this, AFL Barwon used even number age groups, with Under 16 being the highest level of competition before senior football.

AFL Barwon region general manager Will McGregor said the review was in response to feedback from clubs and other key stakeholders.

“Our region is fortunate to have strong participation across junior football. That said, it was identified that a review into the junior age groups needed to be undertaken following feedback from stakeholders,” McGregor said.

“It is our responsibility and duty to listen to all of our key stakeholders and review anything that will ensure the long-term sustainability of clubs and its associate members. This will be a collaborative and thorough review of junior male football age groups that will establish appropriate recommendations.”

All AFL Barwon clubs have been sent a survey and will be consulted regularly throughout the process.

The review will also consider participation data trends across age groups.

Further information on AFL Barwon’s long-term female football strategy will be provided later in the month.
