THE Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association’s (BPCA) longest-serving boss and a well-respected member of the local cricket community, Ian Caldwell, has called time on his role as president.

Caldwell confirmed his departure from the BPCA executive committee last week after 25 years on the committee and 12 years as president, saying senior vice-president Paul Summers will take up the mantle from season 2024/25.

He said the lead-up to his departure had been in motion since the end of the 2023/24 season.

“Prior to the decision I was mindful to the notion that we are all custodians of the sport, so we can manage the organisation, leaving it in a better state than when we began looking after it.

“I’m excited to see what the next generation of administrators can do for this association, but it has been an honour and privilege to lead as president, and I’m mindful people can stay in these positions for too long.

“There have been so many friendships that I have created through this job and it’s always such a great feeling walking into any one of the 16 BPCA clubs and meeting new people and hearing their concerns.

“At the end of the day, everyone in the BPCA loves the game of cricket and wants to see it grow.”

Caldwell noted the growth seen in recent years, following the admission of Armstrong Creek, Inverleigh, Winchelsea and Surf Coast to the association.

He also admired the large expectations such a “small” association continues to meet each season.

Caldwell praised Summers ahead of his ascension to the top job.

“Paul has got a very levelled head, and he has vision,” Caldwell said.

“He will be able to take the association on its next journey and I have no doubts the clubs will receive him well following the work he has done as vice-president.”

Caldwell will continue to serve as chair of the Barwon region in the Victorian Country Cricket League, a board delegate representing the Barwon region, and as a supporter of the Under 21 and Under 18 Barwon Rocket teams coached by Brad Hauenstein and Graham Christie.

He will also spend more time with his local cricket club in Portarlington, serving as the club’s treasurer for a fourth term.

Caldwell was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2023, for his service to cricket, and to professional organisations.
